Hi, I'm Sally

Sally Burgess

Based in Southbank, Melbourne, I would be a useful addition to any crew needing great images. I also like shooting at gigs to keep myself busy. I’m respectful, a good communicator, and work fast to deliver images to my clients. You’ll often find me handing out sweets to grateful crew members. I’m also a bit of a ninja on set.
More Bruce Lee than Kato, thankfully.

My Bio

Originally from England, I emigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand in 2006 to work as Technical Manager for Hoyts, then Reading Cinemas in Queenstown. My love of movies transferred from projection to stills photography which I didn’t know was a thing until I saw the first photo of Daniel Craig as Bond in No Time To Die. I found out it was taken by Nicola Dove and when the chance came to join her Film Stills Academy in 2022 I went for it.
I now live in Melbourne where I’ve been since 2017. Since the Academy, I’ve photographed short films and theatre and you’ll find me in the city with a camera in my hand most days. Street photography in Melbourne is something I love for its unpredictability, capturing some interesting characters, and keeping my steps up. The fact that those steps normally lead to a donut shop is a total coincidence.

Highlights from Sally

I love talking about movies. When I was a kid I was made to watch Jaws. It was utterly traumatising but it became my favourite film of all time. Even my house plants are named Brody, Hooper and Bruce (after the shark). I came to face to face with my own great white in 2002 on a cage dive off South Australia which was unforgettable.
I’ll watch anything with Judi Dench, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp, Toni Collette or Mads Mikkelson to name a few.
Favourite directors are Tarantino and Spielberg.
My photography has appeared in Time Out, ABC Queer, and Yarra Trams social media feature my tram shots regularly.
Career highlight – Reading Cinemas Technical Manager of the Year in 2010.
Location highlight – A fellow projectionist and I were invited to the set of Band Of Brothers by one of the editors. An unforgettable day.
Life Highlight – Moving to the other side of the world
