Hi, I'm Nicola
Nicola Young
I’m an award-winning photographer who has loved shooting performances for many years, mixing capturing unit stills for film and TV with theatre photography. I love the art of storytelling, discreetly capturing those magic moments on set that help show the bigger picture and giving you resources to promote your final film. Based in the Midlands, UK but very happy to travel. I’d love to be part of your next project.

Highlights from Nicola
Every moment on set has been both a highlight and an incredibly valuable experience. Since expanding into Unit Stills I’ve loved being on the set of several short films and a feature film and most recently for the BBC’s TV series Silent Witness.
Capturing the magic of movie making and watching the beauty and vision of other creatives being brought to life, has been an absolute joy. I trained in photography at Dundee’s DCA and Coventry’s City College. In my younger days I was a passionate rock-climber and advanced diver, so I’m not afraid of heights or the wild outdoors.
I shoot with Nikon Z8s Nikon 27-70 f2.8 lens and 70 – 200mm f2.8 lens plus a range of primes.

Nicola was the perfect choice for Olympus Lost
Nicola was fantastic to have on set, she was quiet as a church mouse and yet the quality of her work was gargantuan. Her brilliant photos not only elevated the quality of our production but gave us wonderful material for the marketing of our short film. I would work with Nicola again in a heartbeat on any set.

A display of excellence on and off set!
I decided to set myself a challenge to write/produce and film a short in a few days. The writing and planning process took 2 days, whilst the filming took 1!
However, the original plan was meant to be myself and an actor. After reaching out to people from an assistant director, additional actor, a cinematographer and so on it became a project much bigger than I anticipated.
I decided to ask Nicola if she would love to be apart of it despite the late notice, as it was a personal film challenge. She said yes with no hesitation, she liked the concept, punctual and meshed well with the atmosphere of the cast/crew.
Her professionalism set the bar on what a unit stills photographer could be, she engaged and kept hidden when capturing photos which led to everyone portrayed in their element.
When she edited the photos she had a very fast turnaround, receiving the images back in a matter of days all edited to exceptional quality with the grade.
She’d excelled on and off set, but regardless of her skillset she was an absolute joy to work with! Her commitment towards her craft, kindness and of course her skills makes her one to watch out for.
Exceptional! I know I will 100% have her on again for future projects, strongly recommend! :)

Highly talented stills photographer
Nicola’s work is so very accomplished; the focus, the texture of the shot, the framing, the colours.
You look at one of her photos and you can become lost in it, mesmerised, as she has captured a story in the frame you were not initially aware of.
Her pictures are beautiful, they have a natural quality which captivate you.
On this production we happened to have another stills photographer who Nicola collaborated really well with to the end of producing a consistent tone across the photographs.
Nicola is fantastic to work with; she loves what she does, is always there to take photographs and she is always a cheerful member of the crew regardless of the conditions !!

How did she do that ?
Incredible. If you want discreet stills, Nicola is the photographer you need. She was almost invisible and caught people at their most natural as they were concentrating on their roles – as actor, extra or crew member. The resultant stills are totally natural and true to life.
How did she get all those shots without my noticing her taking a single one ?
She has an eye for composition and a sense of drama and captures the moment every time. Highly recommended – with thanks !
