Hi, I'm Lara
Lara Macgregor
Kia Ora!
I’m a film and theatre stills photographer based in the South Island of New Zealand, able to travel nationally and internationally.
Storytelling has been my work life focus for over 25 years and, in recent times, I have combined my love of directing, actors and photography by embracing the film stills world.
After graduating Nicola Dove’s Film Stills Academy, I’m more passionate than ever to collaborate with fellow artists, to capture dynamic performances, and behind-the-scenes moments of magic.

Highlights from Lara
Every time I step onto a set to take stills I learn more and more – how to look for the moments that best reflect the story, how to stay out of everyone’s way while doing that, how to capture great eyelines without getting in the actors’ eyeline, how to stay ahead of what’s happening in a moment and use every moment as an opportunity. It’s so stimulating and joyous it becomes addictive.
Other photographic projects I’ve been involved with:
Otago Museum: Full Ste(a)m Ahead – 100 Women, 100 Words…Infinite Possibilities (Photographer)
Personal Photography Project: Six Degrees of Inspiration: NZ’s Unsung Heroes (CNZ Funded)

Incredible Stills Photographer
I was fortunate to have Lara on board as a set photographer for my short ‘Milk’ – a film made by small team in a remote location in Dunedin. It was important to me that we capture not just the stills required for the marketing of the film, but also some of the essence of the place we were in, the crew at work and the incredible attention to detail that was present in everything from set design to costumes. Lara was such an asset to our team. Because of her on-set experience as an actor, she was able to shoot intimate moments without ever being obtrusive with the camera. The photographs she delivered were not only beautiful, but they felt very true to the spirit of the film. Her eye for detail, her ability to make a subject feel totally at ease and her incredibly perceptive nature make her the ideal film stills photographer.
